PONTARDAWE ARTS CENTRE EXHIBITION<\/span><\/h3>\n

The Blue Orchard Group<\/span><\/h3>\n
This started in 2007 in response to a request from Anjie Dickinson at Pontardawe Arts Centre to have a rolling Art Exhibition in the foyer. I was given 15 frames\u00a0 to fill so I set about finding quality professional artists in the area to invite.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
It was also decided that the exhibition would be there to raise\u00a0 much needed funds for the ancient\u00a0 & lovely de-consecrated Llangiwg church. This was purchased by members of the community\u00a0 about eight years ago. It can be reached from the Gwrhyd road which is a turning at the Travellers Well in Rhyd-y-Fro. After about half a mile up the steep narrow hill, there is a sign to Llangiwg on the right. If you have driven over the cattle grid, you have gone too far!\u00a0 Membership enquiries can go to Phillis Lewis 01792 862078<\/span><\/div>\n

Finding the right sort of artists proved to be a bit harder than I first thought because not all artists work on paper producing A3 or smaller sized work. The reality is that doing this has been a bit like herding cats.<\/span><\/div>\n

Astronomy at Llangiwg Church<\/span> <\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

The Leonid Meteor Shower: <\/strong>Friday 17th<\/sup> Nov 2017 at 7:00 pm.<\/span><\/h3>\n

Stargazing in the event of good weather, talk and slide show if inclement. Soup and refreshments will be served for a donation of \u00a35.<\/span><\/p>\n

Llangiwg Church, Pontardawe, is a wonderful place to do astronomy enjoying a location of atmospheric beauty. The Ordnance Survey grid ref is SO 272 206 and for Sat Nav the postcode is SA8 4TP. It is adjacent to the 13th<\/sup> tee of the Pontardawe Golf Club, if that is any help! Roads to it are in a fairly poor state so please drive carefully. More advice on best route is given a<\/span>t www.llangiwg.com<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

AstroGothics: Series XVII <\/span><\/b>is in the Hibbert Room at Craig-y-Nos Country Park, Fridays 7 pm to 9 pm. Sessions consist of an eclectic mix of astronomy news, open discussion, slideshows, documentaries and, when opportunity arises, stargazing. With a theme this term of The World\u2019s Great Telescopes<\/i>. <\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The cost is simply a \u00a32 \u2018drop in\u2019 fee each night for everybody. <\/span><\/p>\n

Observational Astronomy<\/strong>. An exciting new course that covers the aspects of becoming an expert stargazer!<\/span><\/p>\n

Topics covered include: observing the Sun, Moon, planets and stars. Recognising constellations. Observing comets, asteroids, meteors and other sky phenomena. Use of telescopes and other astronomical equipment. Simple photography techniques. Field trips to observe the sky will be weather dependent.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is a 10 week course, each week a 2 h session, with a supporting slide show, running 7 pm to 9 pm, night on Mondays, in Canolfan Y Bont, Pontarddulais<\/strong>. The course starts Jan 15th<\/sup>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Brecon Beacons National Park has become only the fifth destination in the world to be granted prestigious International Dark Sky status, making it Wales’ first International Dark Sky Reserve.<\/span><\/p>\n

Llangiwg Star Trail by Ian Glendenning<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Astronomy at Llangiwg Church<\/span><\/h2>\n

Llangiwg Church, beautiful and atmospheric – and none more so than at night! With its remote and splendid isolation atop the Gwrhyd, the church is an ideal and magical location for heavenly contemplation. One of the many and special activities at Llangiwg are now the stargazing and telescope observing sessions of celestial wonders when the weather permits and some astronomical slide shows when inclement. Recently an astronomy class was\u00a0also held here.<\/span><\/p>\n

Another activity that is taking place is astronomical photography. There have been several late night sessions to take ‘star trails’ and other shots around the church. One photograph,\u00a0taken back in August 2009, Star Trails Over Llangiwg<\/em>,\u00a0was exhibited at the Welsh Assembly in October 2010. Another,\u00a0Orion Aside Llangiwg Tower<\/em>,\u00a0appeared in an article detailing astro activities at the church in\u00a0The Community Magazine <\/em>February 2011. (Both of these appear here\u00a0in the ‘Celestial’ collection’.)<\/span><\/p>\n

Llangiwg Church is a remarkable project\u00a0with much more besides astronomy taking place. There is a free monthly newsletter detailing the forthcoming events. Go to<\/span> www.llangiwg.com<\/a> to find out more.<\/span><\/p>\n

Roy Guy, a renowned Gwent artist whose paintings are displayed in iconic buildings throughout Wales, has generously donated his latest painting to support Age Cymru Gwent and the B5 Nephrology (Kidney) Unit at University Hospital of Wales. \u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The impressive rugby-inspired piece will be auctioned during the 2018 Six Nations tournament.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Roy Guy was moved to offer the painting for the care shown to his family members by the B5 Nephrology Unit, which treats patients suffering\u00a0 from Acute Kidney Injury and patients with chronic renal failure.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Renal replacement therapy\u2019 may be in the form of dialysis \u2013 normally a 3-to-4 hour dialysis session three days a week \u2013 or a kidney transplant. The only renal transplant centre in Wales, University Hospital of Wales is also one of only eight transplant centres in the UK offering pancreas or combined kidney and pancreas transplants.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Donations to the unit means there is more money for ongoing research programmes, and allows healthcare professionals to buy additional equipment, over and above what the NHS can normally afford, enhancing the care provided by the service.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Roy has also been a long term supporter of the excellent work of Age Cymru Gwent.<\/span><\/p>\n

This incredible one-off painting is unique and irreplaceable. Sized at 5ft x 4ft, this imposing painting\u2019s mosaic style is inspired by the artist\u2019s childhood, and the patchwork quilts on his bed made by his grandmother.<\/span><\/p>\n
